A SECRET TO LOSING WEIGHT (36 LBS PER YEAR)… FIDGET! #MayoClinic #Study

July 7, 2013 By TheLifestylista

Seriously, you know how they told us when we were kids to “sit still and not fidget so much…” Well, according to scientists at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, that’s exactly the opposite of what we need to do if we want to be slimbos!

The small but important study took 10 ‘obese people’ and 10 ‘slim people’ and put them in top and bottom underwear that used sensors to measure their movements and posture (whether they were sitting, standing or laying down). What they found was that the slim people fidgeted considerably more than their plump counterparts as they went about their day.

Scientists also discovered that the overweight study participants were actually sitting down for an average of 150 minutes more in the day AND they burned 350 fewer calories. This is even though they were all in the same laboratory conditions…
***350 calories a day = 36.5 pounds in a year! A heck of a difference…***

Dr Jim Levine, the lead researcher, designed the study to work out the role of calories burned during daily living (or NEAT – Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, all the things we do that don’t involve deliberate ‘exercise’, eating or sleeping).

“A person can expend calories either by going to the gym, or through everyday activities. Our study shows that the calories that people burn in their everyday activities are far, far more important in obesity than we previously imagined,” says Dr Levine.

So all that fidgeting that you used to do as a kid – shaking your arms, kicking out your feet, tapping that pencil, nodding your head to imaginary music, pacing… Now, just go for it! And if you aren’t a natural fidgeter… Become one! It,’s a small adjustment that can make a load of difference. 🙂
I’m here rooting for you.

NO TIME TO WORKOUT? SPEED UP YOUR METABOLISM IN JUST A 2.5 MINUTES A DAY…

July 6, 2013 By TheLifestylista

Now scientists have just blown a hole through your biggest exercise excuse… “I don’t have time”.

BlowAmCardioWarmupRASTAEROBICS

WHY IS THE SPEED OF YOUR METABOLISM IMPORTANT?
The faster your metabolism, the more calories you burn.

HOW DOES EXERCISE AFFECT METABOLISM?
45mins:
Researchers at Appalachian State University found that 45 minutes of vigorous exercise increases your metabolic rate for a full 14 hours.

20 mins:
One study showed that if you exercise and sweat for 20 minutes, you will speed up your metabolism.

2.5 mins:
Don’t have 20 minutes, well you’re not off the hook Missy… 🙂 According to scientists at Colorado State University, if you do 2.5 minutes of very intense high resistance cardio, this can cause an ‘afterburn’ during the rest of your day that burns up to 200 calories. In this small study, the study participants gave their ALL for 5 x 30 second cycle sprints with 4 mins of gentle exercise recovery time in between each sprint.

HOW DOES AFTERBURN WORK?
Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). Scientists disagree on the exact mechanics of afterburn but one explanation is that intense exercise causes an oxygen deficit (shortage) in the body and so to correct this, our metabolism has to stay in overdrive. The longer and the more intense the exercise, the longer the afterburn.
Important: the exercise must be intense, if you just hang out with your friend and chat while having a gentle stroll, that may be fun and you might catch up on all the gossip BUT it doesn’t count for the purpose of EPOC and afterburn!

What’s the point of this story? Do what you can girl and start small. But do start. Even if it’s 2.5 minutes in a day that you build from. You are worth it and I’m here rooting for you!

CAN I LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT LOSING MY BREASTS?

July 3, 2013 By TheLifestylista

Girl, I don’t know what to tell you. Are you sitting down? Our boobs, bazungas, breast-ios are mostly made up of fat and so when we lose weight, we lose weight in our breasts too.
BUT don’t throw your decision to get fit, healthy and slim out of the window just yet…

BreastsMeasuringTapesportsbra

If you lose weight, you’ll lose it ALL OVER YOUR BODY. You’ll lose weight in your waist, your hips, your thighs and YOU’LL STAY IN PROPORTION… You’ll still be a Coca Cola bottle shape (if that’s what you were!) just smaller!

Here’s a WORD OF WARNING about yo-yo dieting, crash dieting and your precious ta-tas:
If you diet over and over again, your breasts will droop before their time.

WHY?
When you gain / lose / gain weight, you stretch your skin and after a while it just doesn’t have as much bounce-back! If you lose the weight very quickly, you’ll increase the amount of sag because you’re breaking down the collagen and elastin in your skin.
You keep losing those same 10 – 15 pounds and, the only place you’ll be making a permanent change is… to your poor breasts.

Let’s lose our weight the healthy way and keep it off for good. If only for the sake of our breasts! 😉

I am here rooting for you girl!

ANOTHER WAY STRESS MAKES US FAT… IT ACTUALLY MAKES JUNK FOOD TASTE BETTER! #ScientificStudy

July 2, 2013 By TheLifestylista

A 2013 clinical study at Hacettepe University in Turkey took groups of participants and tested how they related to sweet and salty foods normally.

michelle-obama-eating-junk-food
Then the scientists gave the test subjects challenging mental tests in which the scientists used several methods to increase the participants’ stress levels. The scientists used increased heart rate and blood pressure as a way of measuring how truly stressed the participants were and then they fed them again…

This time, the subjects related completely differently to the sweet and salty foods! The study discovered that there is a distinct relationship between our perception of taste and our anxiety levels… The bottom line is the scientists found that, WHEN WE ARE STRESSED, SWEET AND SALTY FOOD TASTE BETTER to us. The stress makes these taste even more appealing than normally and so it’s no wonder that when we’re stressed, we want to eat JUNK FOOD that’s mucho salty and mucho sweet. And, not only are we drawn to different food… because it tastes so much better to us (‘sexy salt’, ‘yummy sugar’ :-(, WE WANT TO EAT MORE OF IT!
Jeez Louise! The only way to beat this is to let the air out of the balloon of your stress…
Here’s one way:
Go to www.TheLifestylista.com and search for “FEELING STRESSED AND WANT TO OVEREAT” – there’s a GREAT BREATHING TECHNIQUE in this article that fights stress and cravings… Just try it! It works.
I am here rooting for you girl! You can so do this.

LADIES – PLEASE GIVE YOUR SUPPORT TO OUR LIFESTYLISTA FRIEND [NAME DELETED]. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? WHAT HELP CAN YOU GIVE FROM YOUR OWN LIFE EXPERIENCE?
Dear [NAME DELETED] I am here for you. Don’t let skin ailments cause you to let go of your dreams. And let them see you acne and all… There’s no need to be ashamed and if a man is scared off by a few pimples then perhaps he might not be the guy afterall!
If you are not allergic to aspirin, perhaps give this a try? I wrote this article for the face but try this on your back…
It all depends on what kind of acne you have (hormonal or bacterial) too.
Keep us posted – let us know how it all goes for you.

GOT ACNE? Try this Homemade DIY aspirin mask…

Ingredients:
– 5 – 8 regular aspirins (preferably without the ‘safety’ or ‘enteric’ coating)
– Bottled water (not tap)
– 1 tablespoon of honey
If you’re allergic to aspirin – don’t use this mask!!!

Putting it together:
First, wash your face so it’s clean (don’t add moisturizer yet).
Then…
1) Get a bowl.
2) Put 5 aspirins in.
3) Add a TINY amount of room temperature bottled water, just a few drops.
4) Use a spoon to mash the aspirin, dissolve it in the water. You want the mixture to get to a paste consistency. If it’s too thick, add a bit of water. If it’s too watery, add another aspirin.
Don’t use more than 8 regular aspirins (aspirin is a drug – it may get absorbed into your bloodstream so don’t use more in your mask than you are allowed to take in a 24 hour period!!! You don’t want to overdose… If you feel any side effects at all when you use this mask stop using it immediately).
5) Add your lovely tablespoon of honey!
6) Mix it all in and apply directly to your CLEAN face.
7) Wash the mask off after it dries (10 – 15 mins) – keep your eyes and mouth shut while you do this – you don’t want aspirin getting in there!
Dry your face, tone your skin (alcohol free toner!) and apply your moisturizer.
9) Marvel at your gorgeous, soft, soothed skin!!! Aaaah
***BLISS***

HOW THIS MASK WORKS:

TO REDUCE REDNESS & INFLAMMATION: The aspirin is an anti-inflammatory!

TO DRY OUT THE PIMPLES: Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid. This is very similar to salicylic acid, the active ingredient in lots of expensive anti-acne products.

ANTIBACTERIAL: The honey is a natural antibacterial so it’ll reduce breakouts if your acne is caused by bacteria (rather than hormones). Honey is also a humectant – it helps the skin retain moisture.

CAREFUL:
Depending on how sensitive your skin is… you can use this mask once a week (maybe twice).
Don’t scrub too hard with your aspirin mix because it can act as an exfoliating scrub and you don’t want to scrub your delicate pimples!
Your aspirin face mask can make your skin more sun-sensitive so after you use it, you might want to wear sunscreen.
This mask can cause skin irritation, dryness and flaking BUT the honey helps counteract this.
And, once again, if you’re allergic to aspirin – don’t use this mask!!!

OBESOGENS – HORMONE DISRUPTERS IN OUR FOOD THAT MAKE US FAT!

June 30, 2013 By TheLifestylista

TaggedLaughinOnALakeFaceSo many of us are confused, angry, upset and disappointed in ourselves!  We’ve exercised, we’ve eaten well (we think) and still we’ve gained weight.  If were were cursers, we’d be cursing! BLEEEEEEEEEP &*%@!

The unfortunate truth is that there is another element that most of us are totally unaware of… EDCs, endocrine disrupting chemicals, aka obesogens!  These chemicals mimic hormones and, because of this, they interfere with our bodies and affect our weight.
HOW DO THESE OBESOGENS MAKE US FAT?
These dastardly chemicals (mostly man made)…  By disrupting our hormones, obesogens change our bodies’ behavior in many areas to do with weight.  Hormones are crucial to our weight because they tell our bodies when to burn fat and when to store it, when to eat and when not to eat.
Some endocrine disrupters alter the way the body allocates cells – so our bodies mistakenly produce more fat cells and / or bigger fat cells!
REALLY THOUGH?!  THIS CAN REALLY AFFECT MY WEIGHT???
Research done at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences discovered that a common fungicide (triflumizole) used on fruit and vegetables caused mice to become obese!  The Presidential Taskforce on Childhood Obesity has acknowledged the link between these chemicals and obesity.  Babies in the womb and young kids are the most at risk.  One study demonstrated that the women who had exposure to pesticides (the ones with pesticide residues in their bodies) gave birth to babies who were significantly more likely to overweight by the time they were 14 months old!
According to Jerry Heindel of the National Instititute of Environmental Health Sciences, “There are between fifteen and twenty chemicals that have been shown to cause weight gain, mostly from developmental exposure.”
WHAT CAN I DO? Two big things:
– Eat organic OR pesticide & fungicide free food.  IF YOU CAN’T DO THAT WASH YOUR FRUIT AND VEG WELL!  This can reduce that amount of these chemicals you take in
– Cut down on food that was wrapped in plastic (BPAs are endocrine disrupters) and food from cans (the chemicals leach into the food).
– Filter the tap water you drink, if you can.  Using e.g. a Brita filter www.brita.com
OTHER EFFECTS…
To be honest, these endocrine disrupters are so darned BLEEP &*%@ that they affect us in other ways too…
Researchers suggest that they can cause:
– a variety of cancers (including breast, prostate)
– problems with fertility
– changes in the functioning of your immune system
– birth defects and a lowering of the birth rate of boys specifically
– Attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities (neurodevelopmental delays) in kids
There are other types of chemicals that make us fat too…  Go to www.TheLifestylista.com and check out my article,”MSG IN FOOD MAKES US FAT & IT’S BEEN — — USED TO MAKE LAB RATS FAT FOR DECADES!”
Knowledge is power!
I am here rooting for you.
